Understanding the Signs and Symptoms of an Infestation

Termites are swarming in Northwest Florida and South Alabama!

No need to panic - we got you! A few tips to help you navigate through this process:

Termites are swarming in this area, as per usual during this time of year. These types of termites are tannish brown or red, approximately ½” long, and may or may not have wings. With 80+ degree temperatures and rainy, humid conditions, termites have started swarming in our area at dusk. These termites swarm outdoors but are strongly attracted to light. They will find their way in through exhaust vents in bathrooms & kitchens, and through any open doors/windows.

These termites with wings cause no damage - they do not get into furniture, eat through walls, bite, or sting. Their purpose is to reproduce. The swarmers do attempt to return to the soil to start a new colony, and will die within 24-48 hours if they cannot do so.

Do swarming termites cause damage? No. Termite swarmers are a nuisance, particularly when swarms occur indoors. However, they do not cause any structural damage.

A few swarmers indoors are inevitable, given the number of termites that swarm. You may have recently seen the Formosan termites appear in your bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, etc. If and when you do, please vacuum them up.

Seeing a few each night for the next month or so is not a clear indicator of termites nesting in your house. A few swarmers are not a cause to be alarmed. Call us to schedule an inspection if you find hundreds of swarmers in a small area of your home, and we will send someone to take a closer look.

Contact us immediately if you see termites accompanied by mud tubes. This may be a sign that termites have caused damage to your walls.

The termite swarm season typically lasts 6-8 weeks and comes in waves.

Some helpful tips if you experience a swarm:
  • Do not panic. There is nothing that can be done while a swarm is active around your home.
  • If the termites are swarming inside, close off the room in which the termites are swarming and turn off all lights (remember: they are attracted to light). Close your curtains and/or blinds to help block the light to the inside.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to remove insects after they’ve swarmed.
  • Termites that swarm inside a structure and cannot get out will quickly die from lack of available moisture.
  • Keep all windows, blinds, and doors closed.
We value our customers and want to help you through this swarm season. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
